尔迪出生于卡帕多西亚的恺撒里亚。他在罗马皇帝李锡尼统治期间，曾出任军官。当时发生了一场屠杀基督徒的血腥事件，之后，高尔迪放弃了军旅生活及其军职，退隐于西奈的旷野中去了。他独自一人在何烈山日日祷告，思索着天地的奥秘。他特别想到了人类在这世上努力争斗的空虚和无谓。最后，他希望脱离这苦难的人生，进入到那美好的永生。抱着这个信念，高尔迪回到了城里，当时，异教徒正在举行竞技比赛。高尔迪找到城市的市长，并表明了自己是基督徒。市长通过引诱和威胁试图说服他放弃信仰，但是都没能动摇他的信仰。高尔迪坚定不移，如同中流砥柱，坚定地说：“用这短暂的时光换取无尽的苦难和灵魂的死亡，这岂不是愚蠢的吗？”他被判处死刑，但他却步履轻盈地前往刑场。一路上，他同刽子手讲述基督荣耀且甘甜的教诲。就这样，高尔迪口诵基督的名，献上了年轻的生命，他刚正不阿的灵魂归于了上帝，时为公元320年。
