奈奥斐特出生于尼西亚。自幼年起，他就从上帝那里领受了显行灵迹的恩典。奈奥斐特曾自石中引水，并复活了他的母亲。在一只白鸽的引领下，他来到了奥林普斯山，在那里，他命一头狮子离开其居住的洞窟，自己在里面住了下来。戴克里先皇帝在位期间，他在尼西亚为基督而遭受磨难，当时年仅十五。无论受到怎样的折磨，他决不否认基督，他遭到毒打关押后又被投入火中，但上帝保守了他的生命。此后，恶徒将他放在一头饥饿的狮子面前，但是这猛兽却丝毫不伤害圣奈奥斐特，相反向他示好。圣人认出这就是自己在其洞窟中修行的那头狮子。圣人爱抚了狮子，并令它返回那个山洞中。最后，圣奈奥斐特被异教徒以矛刺杀，荣获殉道的桂冠，返回天国故乡。
