阿伽塔这位荣耀的童女、为基督而献身的女殉道者出生于西西里的巴勒莫城一个富有的贵族家庭。当德西乌斯皇帝开始迫害基督徒时，圣阿伽塔被逮捕，并被带到法官坤仟面前受审。法官看到阿伽塔美貌动人，欲想娶她为妻。当法官提出婚事的时候，阿伽塔回答说，她是基督的新娘，她不能不忠于她的未婚夫。于是坤仟开始对她施以酷刑。阿伽塔被嘲笑、被鞭打，并被绑在一棵树上，直打到皮开肉绽为止。之后，法官又试图劝说她否认基督，以免再遭受毒打。但是这位基督的新娘却回答说：“这些苦刑对我非常有益，正如小麦要进入谷仓需要脱去谷壳一样；我的灵魂要想进入天国，我的身体也同样要先由酷刑降卑。”而后，那个刽子手命令割去她的双乳并把她投入监狱。在监狱中，圣裴特若向阿伽塔显现使她重新恢复了健康和身体的完整。之后，阿伽塔又被提出遭受毒打，重新又被投入监狱，并在狱中将其灵魂交给了上帝。阿伽塔殉道的时候正值皇帝德西乌斯在位期间的公元251年，地点是卡塔尼亚。在阿伽塔死后，施刑者坤仟前往巴勒莫，打算将阿伽塔的财产据为己有。在路上，坤仟和他的士兵所乘坐的马匹突然野性大发，咬伤了坤仟的脸，并将他撂倒在地上踩得一命呜呼。上帝的惩罚是迅速的，残杀阿伽塔的凶手很快就得到了上帝的惩罚。
