伊息多若出生于埃及显赫的家庭，是亚历山大里亚牧首德奥斐洛和基里尔的亲属。在读完世俗科学之后，伊息多若放弃了世间的荣华富贵，为了基督，他全身心地将自己投入到灵性生活之中。他是正教伟大的热心捍卫者，同时，在解释正教信仰方面卓有成就。根据史学家尼基佛尔的记述，圣伊息多若曾给各种各样的人写了一万多封书信。他在这些信中，有的责备、有的忠告、有的安慰、有的给予指引。圣伊息多若在一封信中写道：“身教胜于言教”；在另一封信中写道：“要想使美德显大，就要自己视其为小，这样它们就必显为伟大。”圣伊息多若首要和基本的原则是：“根据主耶稣的榜样，首先要力行，然后才能教导别人。”在圣金口约安遭受迫害的时候，整个国家的民众一分为二，一些人持反对态度；一些人持支持态度。而圣伊息多若这位正教的石柱站在了圣金口约安一边。他写信给牧首德奥斐洛说，圣金口约安是教会的一盏明灯，并乞求他不要对圣金口约安持仇恨的态度。伊息多若在世时间长寿，且颇有建树，他以自己的生活和著书来荣耀主基督。伊息多若约于公元436 年得以进入基督永恒的国度。
