在罗马帝国暴君戴克里先在位期间，特奥杜拉为了基督的缘故而遭受磨难。在受刑期间，她使施刑者之一赫拉蒂乌斯彻悟，在她的引领下皈依了基督。当赫拉蒂乌斯公开表白了他对基督的信仰时，遭到了斩首。特奥杜拉勇敢地面对了严刑拷打，因此法官说她精神错乱，特奥杜拉回答说：“忘记了唯一真上帝且在没有生命的石头前躬身下拜的你才精神错乱。”而后，法官又对她施以酷刑，特奥杜拉顽强地忍受了过来。她在受刑期间表现出的英勇气概使许多人感到惊异，并皈依了很多人信奉基督，其中著名的两位就是玛喀里和埃维加。他们与特奥杜拉连同其他许多人被投入到火炉中，至此荣耀殉道，得以承受基督的天国。
