Der hl. Großmartyrer Mercurios war Heerführer unter den Kaisern Decius (249-251) und Valerianus (253-259). Seine Eltern wurden Christen, auch er wurde getauft und erhielt den Namen Mercurios. Als Sohn eines römischen Beamten, der nach Cäsarea in Kappadokien kam, wurde Mercurius im Alter von 17 Jahren Soldat. Die Überlieferung berichtet, dass ihm ein Engel erschienen ist, um ihm zu stärkten. Im Kampf gegen die Barbaren zeichnete er sich aus und erregte die Aufmerksamkeit von Kaiser Decius. Dennoch weigerte er sich, den Götzen zu opfern. Ungeachtet der drohenden Verfolgung legte er vor dem Kaiser alle seine Auszeichnungen ab, wurde gefoltert und getötet.
