Die hl. Eugenia war Römerin von Geburt, Tochter des römischen Präfekten von Alexandria in Ägypten. Ihr Vater wurde in Alexandria dann Bischof geworden sein. Zu Christus bekehrt, soll hl. Eugenia in Männerkleidern in ein Männerkloster als „Mönch Eugenios“ eingetreten. Als sie der Unzucht beschuldigt wurde, offenbarte sie ihr richtiges Geschlecht. Sie konnte nun nicht mehr im Kloster bleiben, ging nach Rom und wurde in der Christenverfolgung des Kaisers Gallien (260–268) enthauptet. Das geschah im Jahre 262 in Rom.
