Sarvelos - genannt Touthaël - war nach der legende heidnischer Priester, auf prachtvolles Äußeres bedacht und von vielen fast wie ein König angesehen. Varsimaeos, dem Bischof von Edessa - dem heutigen Sanlıurfa -, gelang es erst nach mehreren fehlgeschlagenen Versuchen, ihn und seine Schwester Vevaea zu bekehren. Sarvelos verschenkte dann sein Hab und Gut und lebte fortan mit dem Bischof. Der römische Statthalter Lysias erfuhr davon, ließ ihn mit Ruten schlagen, mit Nägeln durchbohren, mit Fackeln brennen, schließlich zersägen - doch Sarvelos blieb unversehrt.
