Der ehrw. Isaak lebte im 4. Jahrhundert in der Wüste als Einsiedler. In der Zeit Kaiser Valens (364-368), eines Anhänger der Irrlehre des Arianismus, kam um 378 nach Konstantinopel um dort verfolgte orthodoxe Christen zu unterstützen. Zweimal flehte er Kaiser Valens während dessen Feldzuges an: "Öffne die Kirchen den Orthodoxen Christen, und der Herr wird dir helfen!" Der Kaiser ließ im jedoch bestrafen. Den Kaiser traf dann tatsächlich ein großes Unglück: er wurde in der Schlacht von Adrianopel 378 geschlagen und getötet.
