Das zweite der Konzile in Nicäa, das 7. ökumenische Konzil und das letzte, das auch von der Ostkirche anerkannt wurde, fand 787 statt. Es wurde von Kaiser Konstantin VI. und seiner Mutter Irene einberufen; zwischen 300 und 367 Bischöfe nahmen teil und entschieden im Bilderstreit, dass die Verehrung von Ikonen erlaubt sei.
