Joel war einer der "kleinen" Propheten. Er wirkte in Jerusalem als Kultprophet und weckte im Volk die Hoffnung auf den "Tag Jahwes" als Offenbarung von Gottes Gericht und Gnade und als Aufrichtung der endgültigen Gottesherrschaft. Seine Ankündigung der allgemeinen Geistausgießung (Joel 3, 1 - 5) wurde von Lukas zur Deutung des Pfingstgeschehens herangezogen (Apostelgeschichte 2, 15 - 21).
