La Venerable Parasceva de Serbia nació de padres búlgaros en la villa de Epibata, entre Silistra y Constantinopla, durante el siglo XI. Un día, mientras participaba en los Servicios Divinos, las palabras del Señor le atravesaron el corazón como una flecha: «Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo» (cfr. San Mateo 16:24). Desde ese momento empezó a dar su ropa a los necesitados, por lo que tuvo que soportar muchos reproches de su familia. Tras la muerte de sus padres, la santa fue tonsurada al monasticismo y se retiró al valle del Jordán, donde vivió la vida ascética hasta una edad muy avanzada. Dos años antes de su muerte, un ángel se le apareció ordenándole que regresara a su tierra natal, y así lo hizo. La santa murió apaciblemente. Sus reliquias, que se encuentran en la catedral de Iasi [Rumanía], están incorruptas y obran multitud de milagros.
