Joel es uno de los así llamados “Profetas Menores” del Antiguo Testamento. Uno de los libros de la Biblia lleva su nombre que significa “El Señor es Dios”. Se cree que procedía del Reino de Judá y su predicación se desarrolló básicamente en Jerusalén. La tradición piensa que el libro fue escrito antes del año 750 a.C. y por esta razón es el segundo de los libros de los profetas menores. Pese a esto, la importancia que Joel atribuye al culto, el intenso uso del libro de Ezequiel que hace y alguna cita tomada del libro de Abdias nos hacen concluir que el libro fue redactado alrededor del año 400 a.C.
