Ὑπῆρξε μαθητής τοῦ ὁσ. Σεργίου τοῦ Ραντονέζ, λάτρης τῆς ἡσυχίας καί μεγάλος ἀγωνιστής τῆς ἀσκήσεως. Ἀπό τόν Γέροντά του ὅσ. Σέργιο ὁρίσθηκε Ἡγούμενος τῆς Μονῆς Κοιμ. Θεοτόκου, τήν ὁποία ἵδρυσε ὁ Μεγ. Ἡγεμόνας ἅγ. Δημήτριος Ντόνσκοϊ, σέ ἀνάμνηση τῆς νίκης τῶν Ρώσων κατά τῶν Τατάρων τοῦ Χάν Μαμάη. Τό 1392, μετά τήν ἀναχώρηση τοῦ ὁσ. Σεργίου στή ἔρημο, ὁ ὅσ. Σάββας ἀνέλαβε τήν ἡγουμενία τῆς Λαύρας τῆς Ἁγίας Τριάδος. Τό 1399 ἵδρυσε τήν Μονή τοῦ Σβενίγκοροντ, μέ τήν βοήθεια τοῦ πνευματικοῦ του τέκνου Μεγ. Ἡγεμόνα Γεωργίου Δημήτριεβιτς. Στό Συναξάριό του (τοῦ 16ου αἰ.), σημειώνεται ἐμφάνισή του στόν Ἡγούμενο τῆς Μονῆς Σαβίνσκ Διονύσιο καί τοῦ ζήτησε νά ἁγιογραφήση τήν μορφή του.
