Ὁ Ἅγιος Στέφανος ἦταν νεότερος υἱὸς τοῦ αὐτοκράτορος Βασιλείου Α’ τοῦ Μακεδόνος (867 – 886 μ.Χ.) καὶ τῆς Εὐδοκίας. Γεννήθηκε περὶ τὸ 868 μ.Χ. καὶ ἦταν ἀδελφὸς τοῦ αὐτοκράτορος Λέοντος τοῦ Σοφοῦ (886 – 912 μ.Χ.) καὶ εἶχε χρηματίσει μαθητὴς καὶ σύγκελλος τοῦ Πατριάρχου Φωτίου. Γιὰ τὸ ἄκακο τοῦ χαρακτῆρος του, τὴν ἁπλότητα τοῦ βίου, τὸ ἐξαίρετο ἦθος, τὴ σύνεση, τὴ μεγάλη μόρφωση καὶ τὴ βαθιὰ εὐσέβεια, τὸ 886 μ.Χ., μετὰ τὴν δεύτερη πατριαρχία τοῦ Φωτίου, ἐνῷ βασίλευε ὁ Λέων, ἐξελέγη σὲ νεαρὴ ἡλικία ἀπὸ τὴν Ἱερὰ Σύνοδο καὶ χειροτονήθηκε Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως. Διακρίθηκε γιὰ τὴν ἐγκράτεια καὶ ἀσκητικότητα τοῦ βίου καὶ τὴν φιλάνθρωπη δράση του. Κοιμήθηκε μὲ εἰρήνη νεότατος τὸ 893 μ.Χ. καὶ ἐνταφιάσθηκε στὴ μονὴ τοῦ Ἁγίου Γεωργίου «ἐν τῷ Δευτέρῳ», τὴν ἐπιλεγόμενη τοῦ Συκιώτου.
