Ο Άγιος Ελευθέριος ήταν επίσημος Κωνσταντινουπολίτης, συγκλητικός στο αξίωμα, που ανατράφηκε και μορφώθηκε μέσα στα ανάκτορα. Μερικοί από τους Συναξαριστές αναφέρουν, ότι το αποκορύφωμα της δόξας του Ελευθερίου ήταν στην εποχή του Μαξιμιανού (286 - 305 μ.Χ.), με τον οποίο είχε φιλία, αλλά αυτό δεν φαίνεται πιθανό.
