Ο Άγιος Προκόπιος ήταν ασκητής διάσημος, αλλά και πολυμαθής θεολόγος και φιλόσοφος. Εγκαταστάθηκε στη Σκυθόπολη της Παλαιστίνης και επιτελούσε τα καθήκοντα του αναγνώστη και κήρυκα. Καταγγέλθηκε όμως ότι είλκυε πλήθη ειδωλολατρών στη Χριστιανική θρησκεία, συνελήφθη και οδηγήθηκε δέσμιος στην Καισαρεία της Παλαιστίνης. Εκεί προσπάθησαν να τον πείσουν ότι η αλήθεια βρίσκεται στο Πολυθεϊκό θρήσκευμα. Εκείνος, ανατρέποντας τα επιχειρήματα των αντιπάλων του, παρέθεσε μεταξύ άλλων και την Ομηρική φράση: «Οὐκ ἀγαθὸν πολυκοιρανίη, εἷς κοίρανος ἔστω». Επιμένοντας έτσι στην αληθινή πίστη του, καταδικάστηκε σε θάνατο δια ξίφους.
