Ο Άγιος Ανανίας καταγόταν από την πόλη Αρβήλ (Άρβηλα) της Περσίας και ήταν ένας μεταξύ των Αγίων που δόξασαν το έδαφος της Περσίας με τις αρετές και τον ηρωισμό τους για την πίστη. Συνελήφθη διότι προσπαθούσε να διαφωτίσει τους πατριώτες του στην αληθινή πίστη του Χριστού. Βασανίστηκε σκληρά, αλλά δεν κάμφθηκε. Την στιγμή που παρέδιδε την ψυχή του στον Κύριο, είπε αυτά τα λόγια: «Βλέπω κλίμακα (δηλαδή, σκάλα) που εκτείνεται έως ουρανού και νέους με φαεσφόρα πρόσωπα, οι οποίοι ίστανται επάνω της και μού λέγουν: “Ελθέ μεθ’ ημών (δηλαδή, έλα μαζί μας), ελθέ και θέλομέν σε φέρειν (δηλαδή, θα σε φέρουμε) εις πόλιν πλήρη φωτός και αρρήτου αγαλλιάσεως”». Μόλις πρόφερε τα λόγια αυτά ο μάρτυς ξεψύχησε.
