Распален со ревност за Христовата вер овој благочестив цар крена војска против кнезот Дунаан, свирепиот мачител на христијаните во земјата Омиритска. Но во почетокот на војната немаше успех и многу од неговата војска пропадна во пустината. Тогаш тој горко плачеше пред Бога и вети дека ако Бог му помогне да го победи христијанскиот крвник тој ќе се замонаши. Откако го победи Дунаан, Елезвој се врати во Етиопија и веднаш го напушти царскиот дворец и стапи во манастир. Таму се подвизуваше како вистински монах цели петнаесет години. Бог му подари благодат на чудотворство пред и после смртта. Се упокои во 555 година.
