El s-a născut în cetatea Agrigentum din Sicilia, în care avea să fie mai tîrziu episcop, din părinţi foarte evlavioşi, pe nume Hariton şi Theodota. Viaţa întreagă a Sfîntului Grigorie a fost plină de mari şi minunate minuni dumnezeieşti. El în chip minunat a ajuns la Ierusalim; în chip minunat a fost ales episcop; şi în chip minunat a fost izbăvit de clevetiri drăceşti. El însuşi a fost mare făcător de minuni, căci a trăit ca un plăcut al lui Dumnezeu, ca un mare părinte duhovnicesc şi ca un mare nevoitor. El a fost unul dintre Sfinţii Părinţi de la Sinodul al Cincilea Ecumenic de la Constantinopol, din anul 553. După multe şi mari încercări el s-a săvîrşit cu pace către Domnul, către sfirşitul veacului al şaselea sau începutul veacului al şaptelea.
