El a fost un cetatean de vaza al Ankirei [Ankara de azi]. Venind împaratul Iulian Apostatul în aceasta cetate, Ghemel a stat înaintea lui si 1-a certat cu îndrazneala pentru lepadarea lui de credinta. Pentru aceasta el a fost torturat bestial si rastignit pe cruce la anul 361. Dîndu-si în chinuri lente duhul pe cruce, Sfîntul Mucenic Ghemel a auzit un glas din cer Care i-a zis: Ghemele, binecuvîntat esti tu.
