El s-a născut la Ierusalim. El a fost prieten şi frate duhovnicesc al Sfîntului loan Damaschin, ca unul care, rămînînd orfan, a fost luat şi crescut de părinţii Sfîntului loan, împreună cu fiul lor. Fiind daţi amîndoi la învăţătura cea mai înaltă a cărţii, şi a celei lumeşti şi a celei duhovniceşti, ei s-au făcut amîndoi monahi la lavra Sfîntului Sava cel Sfinţit. Sfîntul Cosma i-a fost de ajutor Sfîntului loan la alcătuirea Octoihului, scriind însuşi multe canoane închinate sfinţilor. Sfintele canoane de el alcătuite la Sîmbăta lui Lazăr, la Duminica Floriilor şi la Săptămîna Patimilor, sînt de o frumuseţe şi adîncime cu adevărat dumnezeieşti. Sfîntul Cosma a fost sfinţit Episcop de Maiuma, în Palestina, aproape de Gaza. El i-a supravieţuit Sfîntului loan Damaschinul, săvîrşindu-se cu pace la bătrîneţi foarte adînci.
