Sfîntul Andrei a fost preot ortodox, de neam cretan. în vremea prigoanelor împotriva sfintelor icoane [iconoclasmul], el s-a arătat mare apărător al cinstirii lor. Sfîntul Andrei a mers la Constantinopol spre a vădi înaintea tuturor pe răul împărat Copronim. Pe cînd împăratul stătea în biserica Sfîntului Mucenic Mamant, Andrei a intrat în biserică, s-a dus înaintea lui, şi în auzul tuturor celor dinăuntru 1-a certat pe împărat pe faţă: „Ţi-ar fi mai bine ţie, împărate, să îţi vezi de treburile tale civice şi ostăşeşti, decît să prigoneşti Sfîntă Biserica lui Dumnezeu şi pe robii Lui." Pentru aceasta Sfîntul Andrei a fost bătut cu sălbăticie, torturat bestial şi tîrît pe străzile cetăţii, pînă cînd la un moment dat un eretic 1-a lovit cu o secure şi 1-a omorît. Astfel şi-a dat Sfîntul Andrei sufletul în mîinile lui Dumnezeu, la anul 767. La sfintele lui moaşte s-au lucrat multe minuni către neputincioşi şi bolnavi.
